The global managed services market is projected to reach $370.5 billion in 2026, up from $330.4 billion in 2025, according to Fortune Business Insights. That growth is fueled by surging cybersecurity threats, AI adoption across IT operations, and an expanding skills gap that pushes organizations toward outsourced expertise. Meanwhile, Gartner forecasts worldwide IT spending at $6.37 trillion in 2026, with IT services alone accounting for $1.57 trillion. Managed services represent a growing share of that spending as businesses seek predictable costs, 24/7 monitoring, and access to specialized talent they cannot hire in-house.

Managed Services Market Size and Growth
The managed services industry continues its rapid expansion. Fortune Business Insights values the global market at $330.4 billion in 2025 and $370.5 billion in 2026, with projections reaching $1.12 trillion by 2034. That represents a compound annual growth rate of 14.8% over the forecast period.
North America dominates with $142.6 billion in managed services revenue in 2025, capturing 43.2% of the global market. The United States alone is expected to generate $106.8 billion in 2026. Other significant markets include China ($32.9 billion), Japan ($18.8 billion), India ($17.9 billion), and the United Kingdom ($16 billion). Asia Pacific ($74.1 billion in 2025) and Europe ($63.2 billion) round out the major regions, with emerging markets in Latin America ($27.8 billion) and the Middle East and Africa ($22.7 billion) also contributing to global growth.
The broader IT services landscape is equally robust. Gartner's July 2026 forecast projects the IT services segment at $1.57 trillion, growing 5.3% year over year. Total worldwide IT spending is on track to reach $6.37 trillion in 2026, a 14.2% increase driven heavily by AI infrastructure buildout. As Gartner analyst John-David Lovelock noted, building the compute capacity required for AI is "the largest infrastructure project ever attempted by humanity."
For organizations evaluating whether to build internal IT capacity or partner with a provider, understanding the benefits of managed IT services is a critical first step. The combination of rising breach costs, an accelerating threat landscape, and persistent workforce shortages means managed services are no longer a convenience but an operational necessity for most midsize and enterprise organizations.
Managed Security Services Growth
Cybersecurity is the fastest-growing segment within managed services. Grand View Research estimates the managed security services market at $41.8 billion in 2026, up from $38.0 billion in 2025, on its way to $86.3 billion by 2033 at a 10.9% CAGR.
North America holds a 35.1% share of managed security revenue, with data security as the largest segment (23.8% of the market) and cloud security growing the fastest. Large enterprises currently represent the biggest buyer segment, but small and midsize businesses are the fastest-growing adopter group as cyber threats increasingly target smaller organizations with fewer in-house defenses.
The urgency is clear. The FBI reported that cybercrime losses exceeded $16 billion in 2024, a 33% year-over-year increase. That trajectory has only accelerated, pushing more organizations toward managed IT security services and dedicated MSSPs.
The Cost of Not Having Managed Security
IBM's 2026 Cost of a Data Breach Report paints a stark picture for organizations that underinvest in security. The global average breach cost reached $4.99 million, up 12% from the prior year. In the United States, the average breach cost hit $11.5 million, more than double the global figure.
Sector-specific costs are even more dramatic. Financial services breaches averaged $6.3 million, while healthcare breaches cost $6.64 million per incident. Phishing-based breaches averaged $5.9 million, and AI-driven attacks added roughly $1 million on top of typical breach expenses.
One of the most striking findings: organizations using AI and automation in their security operations reduced breach costs by nearly $2 million on average. Yet only 18% of organizations currently apply AI agents to vulnerability management, and just 37% of breached organizations encrypt sensitive data both at rest and in transit. These gaps represent a significant opportunity for managed security providers that can deploy AI-augmented detection and response capabilities on behalf of their clients.
IBM's report also found that 85% of organizations plan to increase security spending after learning about frontier AI capabilities, and over 50% of respondents reported using AI agents for threat detection and containment. For organizations without dedicated security teams, partnering with an MSSP that already has these capabilities in place is far more practical than building them from scratch.
The average time to identify and contain a breach stood at 247 days in 2026, with supply chain compromises taking even longer at 258 days. Ransomware now affects 39% of breached organizations, up from 24% in 2023, with 41% of those attacks including brand reputation threats.
Third-Party Risk and the Supply Chain Problem
The Verizon 2026 DBIR analyzed thousands of breach incidents and found a dramatic shift in attack vectors. For the first time in 19 years, vulnerability exploitation (31% of all breaches) surpassed stolen credentials as the leading entry point. Credential abuse still appeared in 39% of breaches overall, but the pivot toward exploiting unpatched vulnerabilities signals a change that directly affects how organizations evaluate their managed service providers.
Third-party and supply chain breaches jumped 60% year over year, now representing 48% of all breaches. That figure underscores why vendor risk management has become a core selling point for managed IT service providers. Only 26% of known exploited vulnerabilities were fully remediated in 2025, down from 38% the previous year, suggesting that many organizations simply cannot keep pace with patching on their own.
AI, Shadow IT, and Emerging Risks in 2026
The 2026 threat landscape is being reshaped by AI on both sides of the security equation. IBM's report found that one in four malicious breaches are now AI-enabled, a 56% increase year over year. Shadow AI, the use of unapproved AI tools by employees, has surged from 15% to 45% of employees in a single year, according to the Verizon DBIR. Shadow AI is now the third most common non-malicious data leakage activity.
Mobile-based social engineering attacks have a success rate 40% higher than traditional email phishing, and 44.2% of vendor email compromise messages were engaged with by employees. AI bot internet crawlers are also growing at 21% month over month, compared to just 0.3% for human-led traffic, creating new attack surfaces that automated monitoring must cover.
These trends create new categories of risk that managed services providers are well positioned to address through endpoint management, zero-trust architectures, and continuous monitoring. Shadow AI incidents alone cost an average of $5.39 million per breach, with 20% resulting in regulatory fines, according to IBM. Organizations without a managed services partner to enforce AI governance policies and monitor shadow tool usage face mounting exposure.
On the provider side, the GTIA State of the Channel 2026 report found that more than three-quarters of North American IT service providers forecast AI and cybersecurity as their top revenue growth categories. In the ASEAN region, over 50% of providers report that AI solutions account for 6 to 25% of their total revenue. One-quarter of North American IT service providers now identify as "AI-driven" organizations.
However, the talent gap remains a constraint. In the UK and Ireland, workforce skills and talent shortages are the biggest challenge for more than one-third of providers, while macroeconomic uncertainty is the largest inhibitor in the Benelux region. The tension between soaring demand for AI and security services and the difficulty of hiring qualified staff is one of the defining dynamics of the managed services industry in 2026. It also explains why small businesses in particular increasingly rely on MSPs rather than attempting to recruit and retain specialized IT talent internally.
How Managed IT Services Can Help
These statistics make one thing clear: the threat landscape is growing faster than most organizations can address on their own. Whether it is breach costs approaching $5 million globally, supply chain vulnerabilities affecting nearly half of all incidents, or AI-driven attacks surging 56% in a single year, the case for partnering with experienced managed service providers has never been stronger.
